I’ve had the Yakima Topwater on my kayak trailer for a month. It’s got pros and cons, but overall I’m happy with the purchase. Pros: It’s definitely a secure box. I love that it’s a single key. It’s really lightweight for its size. It was easy to install and took about 5 minutes. It doesn’t rattle and has very little wind noise. Cons: As others have stated, it won’t lock unless you push down slightly on both ends. I consider that a slight inconvenience. It’s also really dark inside. My fix for that was installing 2 battery operated lights on each end. Overall: Yes, it is a very expensive purchase. The competition would be building rod tubes out of pvc. I chose the Yakima Topwater for its ability to hold 8 rods with reels on it in a secure manner that won’t damage them. Rod tubes are cheaper, but can’t hold as many bait caster rod/reel combos and what you can fit will eventually get damaged.
