I've had two sets of wing bars. Sold the first with my car and easily mounted my second set just the other day. I love the sleek design, quiet ride, and the protective rubber mounting surface. Super smart design--don't change a thing.

So I’m driving home to Burlington Ontario from Edmonton in my new (to me) BMW X5. My 17 foot canoe is on top fastened securely to my new Thule EVO WingBar rack. I take highway 101 west from Wawa because the traffic is light and the scenery more interesting, and there on a clear early morning, cruising along at the posted 80 km/h limit, I find myself at the good end of a mile long straight section, not a car in sight. I press hard with my right foot, and I kept on pressing until exhilaration turned into fear. Just before letting off a glance at the heads-up display tells me I am exceeding the posted limit by exactly 100km/h. Now I’m thinking that 180 km/h with a 17 foot canoe on the roof is a fairly exclusive club. And I’m happy to report to you that the roof rack held and the canoe did not even wiggle.

Difficult To Assemble, Most

I bought a used car, which did not have roof rails. I was very relieved to discover that it was possible to put a rack onto my car. This one was guaranteed by Thule to fit my car and it does. First, it was hard to find the right menu tree to identify the correct rack unit Second, this thing is tricky to put together and install. Watching the YouTube video is absolutely critical. You cannot figure out how to put it together just from the written instructions. However, getting it properly onto the top of the car so that it sits well is not easy. I had to get help from somebody with stronger hands. Unfortunately, in use, I’m finding it quite noisy. You definitely can hear it up there on top of the car. Given how hard it was to install, I’m reluctant to take it off. However, after the current trip, I think I’m going to want to, because of the noise. Still, it does seem to be on there securely. There are some rubber strips on top of the wing bars. They fit into a slot there on top. I don’t know what this structure is supposed to be for. It isn’t relevant to my roof box. However, it’s really easy to accidentally loosen those rubber strips. I’ve had them come out and start banging against the car. That makes me afraid that I’m going lose one of them.

Disappointing Engineering

On my precious vehicle, I had subscribed to a Thule roof bicycle and kayak mount, but had already had crossbars from the vehicle’s manufacturer (GMC). That system worked great, and I had no complaints. So when I updated my vehicle to a 4Runner, I thought it best that I get Thule crossbars to work with the equipment I already had. I bought the Evo bars, and they installed relatively easy and look nice. However, the rubber stripping is hugely problematic— the bars have only been on my 4Runner a couple weeks, and the rubber stripping has come out twice in two different touch-less car washes. Simply the pressure of the water is detaching the rubber strips. I’ve had to pull over multiple times after heavy rain and the car wash to push the strip back into the grooves. It’s really disappointing for how much these cross rails cost, and increases anxiety over how temperamental the rubber stripping is. Now will have to invest in trying to find a way to “glue” the stripping to the rails— but all in all, I really wish I hadn’t bought these rails. I expect more out of Thule to think through these potential issues.

I am thrilled with my new wing bars. I just took them out on the highway for the first time, and I don't hear a sound or see any difference in my gas mileage. And they look pretty great, too.

Did Not Come With Key

Rack is nice but did not come with key. I checked all over the box and it's not in there.

Great Rack But No Locks.

Great fit, for my 5th Gen 4Runner. Instructions are very much ikea-like but straightforward to install. For the price it should come with locks instaed of cheap plastic plugs.

Solid!

No issues at all with set up and installation. I watched a youtube video as a guide to supplement with the instructions, and it took no longer than 30-40 mins. The quality is 10/10 so far. Not much wind noise at 30 or even 80 mph as I also installed the Thule wind fairing.

Easy Installation, Looks Great!

Easy Installation - Works Perfectly

I bought the WingBar Evo's just before the holidays in preparation for a road trip and am so pleased with my purchase. I have flush mounted rails and was a little concerned about installation. However, they were so easy to install on my vehicle. The instructions were clear and I was able to install without any issues at all. Once on the vehicle, they look great and are very solid and sturdy. I placed my ski box on the rack with no issues and they worked so well on our road trip. I'm very happy with these bars!
