Three-layer vs. 2.5-layer rain jacket: What is different?
A three-layer shell bonds face fabric, waterproof membrane and backing for durable protection. A 2.5-layer shell uses a printed interior treatment and may feel lighter. The Torrentshell 3L prioritizes long-term waterproof durability and regular outdoor use, while many 2.5-layer options emphasize lighter weight and packability for occasional rain protection. Frequent hikers, travelers and outdoor users may benefit from the added durability of a 3-layer shell, while occasional users may appreciate the reduced weight of a 2.5-layer design.
What are H2No, DWR and pit zips?
H2No is Patagonia’s waterproof/breathable standard. A durable water-repellent finish helps water bead on the outer fabric, while pit zips add ventilation. Adjustable hood, cuffs and hem help seal out precipitation.
Who is it best for?
Best for hikers, travelers, commuters and outdoor enthusiasts seeking reliable waterproof protection in changing weather conditions. The Torrentshell 3L is especially useful for people who regularly spend time outdoors in the rain, whether on the trail, traveling or navigating daily commutes. Its three-layer construction makes it a strong option for users looking for a durable rain jacket that can handle frequent wear rather than occasional emergency use. Hikers needing dependable weather protection, travelers wanting a packable rain layer and everyday users seeking a versatile waterproof shell made with recycled materials may find the Torrentshell 3L particularly appealing.
Fabric is a little stiff but it does what it is supposed to, keeps the wind and rain out. Color is as pictured. A good buy.

Good For Its Intended Purpose
Overall, for a rain jacket, it is solid. One thing I did not expect, and was almost a dealbreaker, was the long sleeves. The sleeves are very long which makes it a little annoying at times. There is velcro at the wrists to tighten, but I find when I tighten to make it wearable, I then have to undo the velcro to the jacket off.
Overall, it's a very nice jacket and they have a great warranty on the product. Just a heads up on the long sleeves.

Patagonia Men's Torrentshell 3l Jacket- Just What I Needed!
I did extensive research on rain shells before deciding on the Patagonia Torrentshell 3L Jacket. There are more expensive rain shells on the market but at some point you are just paying for a name. It has all the features I wanted and when it went on sale I didn't hesitate.

Effective And Not Toxic.
Used in about 3 storms now. Perfectly dry underneath. Hood fitting adjustments are awesome, if you’re using it for running it won’t be bouncing around on your head and twisting. Also very happy with the material choices and Patagonia’s restoration/repair policies.

Best Rain Coat
Great rain coat, I had older version lasted 15 years (still have it), just last year it started to fall apart - worth the price due to how long they last!

Uncomfortable Pitt Zippers
The zippered armpits were really uncomfortable. I appreciate the mesh there but they don’t need zippers. It makes all the other features moot if I don’t want to wear it.

Quality
While I haven't gotten to use it for its intended purpose yet, I can tell you it is a high quality product (I'd hope so for the price). I look forward to using it in the rain. I'll update this review if it does not meet expectations, but for now, I am hopeful.
