The Outdoor Research Frostline Hat is one of my favorites. The exterior is water repellent and the inside is super soft and warm. It features a small pocket near the left ear that opens up to a face mask for really cold days. It also has a draw-band to tighten up and keep on your head if windy or on the run. A well thought out product.

Lightweight, compact, packs well, many wearable options, great price: a winner!

Very Warm

Very warm and greatly appreciated it when shoveling snow this past winter. there was more snow and lower temps than usual. fit is a little tight and wish the bill was a little longer but it gets the job done. won't blow off in the wind. does fit over my glasses. like the black color. the feel of the material is very nice. Not itchy or scratchy. Has handled sweat well. would recommend to fight off the cold but you may need sunglasses or goggles for the sun or glare.

The hat is very warm and the ear and face coverings provide excellent warmth for their thickness. My only problem with this hat is that the velcro strips on the earflaps stick to most of my jackets and sweaters, which can be pretty annoying (and potentially damaging to the jackets and sweaters). There may be a way to avoid that issue, and if that is the case, then I'd raise my rating to 5 stars.

A Perfect Hat

I've had dozens of hats over the decades, and this is a perfect one when I'm generating some heat from exercise (hiking, skiing). (A warmer hat's needed for standing around in cold weather.)

Warmth With Breathability When Needed

I have a wool hat by OR and I find that hat to be way to warm. This trapper hat is the perfect balance of warmth and breathability. The built in face shield is genius. The Velcro chin straps are a bit lacking for securing but an easy fix is better Velcro. The ear flaps allow the right amount of heat to be trapped to keep you warm without out being too hot.

Not A Frost Line

It is a very technically designed product therefore it appears difficult to wear it for theater and dinner evenings. So should it be used 'outdoor'? All right: but then it is too thin: chill and wind easily pass through it and head freezes. Parka's hoodie over it, is necessary to reach a basic comfort. In itself is a good product; only be aware it does not carry itself alone, the burdens winter let you experience, despite the name inducing to believe.

Only Thing Missing Is A Snap In Addition To/in Place Of Velcro Chin Strap

I love this hat and the various ways you can use it. The concealable face mask was the winning factor for me as I knew I would be sleeping outside in the winter but didn't want to breathe into my sleeping bag at night. The only thing I found myself wishing for was a snap/button to keep chin strap in place in either position (over the ears or under the chin.) The velcro was not very grabby and quickly got "clogged up" with other fine fibers from other layers I had on. If there were a snap or other form of latch it would have stayed in place easier. Still, I would easily buy this hat again because the face mask and overall warmth/water resistance/versatility.

Awesome Hat

I used this item combined with smith snow goggles in the dead of night on Lake Superior in February, the combo provided a perfect seal allowing none of the icy wind to reach my skin. The wind blocking mask is probably the sleekest feature to a hat I've seen in my entire life. Props to Outdoor Research for this one

If The Velcro Is Improved

I need it to close snuggly under my chin and it does not.

Really Warm

I bought this for a winter trip to Fairbanks. It fits snuggly and the face wrap is a nice touch. I was able to put another beanie on top of it to stay warm in -25 degree weather.

Meh...

I really wish I loved this but the ear flaps are too small and the Velcro rarely stays attached and usually requires 2 hands to attach... tough to do while holding onto a dog sled. The fit is decent and the cinch on the back is nice. I was expecting a bit more functionality for the money and from OR

Love Everything But The Sizing.

I love the design, features, and construction of this hat. I'm in Alaska and find it has become my go-to hat when I'm headed outside for the day. It adjusts for a wide variety of conditions. The reason it doesn't max out the ratings for me is a sizing issue. I normally wear a size 7 3/4 hat. The largest size just fits but is snugger than I'd prefer. If it were just a slightly looser fit it would be a hard hat to beat for my Alaska winter days.

I Hate Cold Ears!

This hat is the best! I hate cold ears and few hats really address warmth, water and wind resistance for ears. This hat does all three. I got an XL so I can fit a think merino liner under in extreme cold. The hat converts to a "cap" well. On the mountain this Elmer Fudd hat is wicked cool!

Excellent Versatile Warm Hat

Form fit and function are great. The versatility is awesome. Great from trail head, to summit, to the bar.
