I use Nikwax Down Wash on pretty much all my down jackets and sleeping bags. It cleans them without messing with the insulation, and somehow makes them feel light and fluffy again. My gear ends up looking and feeling almost like new, and I don’t have to worry about harsh chemicals. I just throw it in the washing machine and it does its thing—super easy and reliable.

Best Wash For Your Down

I love how easy this product is to use and how clean it gets my puffy coats, without leaving a residue.

I use this for my technical down clothing items. I don't wash my camp down items super often unless they are visibly soiled or smelly. Can't use regular detergent. I've used this multiple times on several items of clothing and a sleeping bag and it has worked well.

Worked Well

I was able to easily clean a down jacket that accidentally became a soup bowl during a strenuous overnight climb. I followed the directions and made sure to program my washing machine for an extra rinse. I did not see any film or residue. I dried it on air only, periodically removing it to manually break up clumps of wet down that had accumulated along the seams beside the zippers. It was dry after tumbling for a bit more than two hours and now looks (and smells, thankfully) as good as new!

Down Jackets

I think it does an ok job of cleaning down jackets. Have also used with synthetic insulation on accident and it didn't do any harm but there is probably a better product out there. It does leave a little residue sometimes so rinsing twice is a good idea.

Extra Rinse Required

Did a fantastic job cleaning up my down jacket and vest at the end of the ski season last year. Dirt spots came clean and brought a fresh scent to both vest and puffy. I did find though that the soap maybe has a harder time rinsing out of both the best and hoody leaving a bit of a residue on the outside on the garments. Did a re-wash and used the extra rise function on the washer and a majority of the soap residue from the previous cycle came out during the second wash.
