The Luci Explore is a neat little gadget and just was I was hoping for to charge my gear during hikes and camping. It’s super light, easy to stash in your pack for a quick speaker and light, easy to plug your gear into, easy to look at, and PERFECT for super sunny Arizona adventures. I love that you can change the colors on it for “mood” settings, and the wave/natural sounds as a soothing wake up alarm are a great addition, and one of my favorite parts. I also enjoyed the different color options, from bright red, to standard “light” colored, to a turquoise-ish to green. Added bonus – for a horse person – it fits in a saddle bag, in case you just can’t live without background music to your ride ;) I had really been looking for a solar powered charger for years before coming across the Luci, it was generally price that kept me from investing in one for so long. My most recent solo camp trip with no service was a particularly great opportunity to test it out. For charging, it’s great. But I had a few struggles that keep me from giving it a higher review. First, I downloaded the Mpowered App necessary to control the Luci. There are a few options in App – Brightness, Color, Mood, Schedule, Wake-up, and Speaker. The two things I really had trouble with was connecting my iPhone to the speaker, and getting it to actualy charge from the light. It didn’t always register that the phone was plugged into it. Both of which took some troubleshooting and I reached out to the MPowered team for assistance who was super helpful and responsive to my struggles. I will second other reviews though in the speaker sound is kind of grainy, but since my main goal for this is light and a charger while camping, it isn’t much of a deal breaker. The Luci is completely controlled from your phone, which means you have to find your phone and navigate to the app when you want to change anything. Somehow it seems like it is upside down when you flip it over to charge it, since the plastic bottom seems like a top, but you have to flip it to get the solar plate in the sun. It almost seems like it could have some little legs to prop it up off the ground/table. The real question, would I buy it again, or recommend from a friend? Yes, it’s a great charger and nightlight. But I think I’d like to see a few modifications before giving a 5-star, YES AWESOME -everything-I-ever-wanted review.

I recently received my Luci Explore light and have fallen deeply in love. The light is extremely bright and effective in regards to camping. Easy to use (only one button). Charges quickly and easily via solar panel and additionally with a charging port. You can check the battery level and edit the light settings on a neato Luci Light app. You can do some cool color settings, alarms, and adjust your brightness! You can even sync your light with others to mimic the same colors and patterns. Holy snot this light has it all. I initially had an issue where I thought the light would no longer turn off. The speak was continually running. However, after checking the app, I realized the light just needed to update. For that reason, the app is incredibly useful and easy to navigate.

We love our other Luci light (the string light) for camping and the backyard, so we were excited to try out the Luci Explore. Something that drives me crazy about camping lights is when they put off a blue or bright white light instead of a warm glow. A nice thing about this light/speaker is that you can pick precisely the color and brightness you want. And honestly, the option to have the bright white light on the Luci Explore is also pretty handy for unpacking the car and more utilitarian purposes that require brighter light, so it has the best of both worlds in that regard. For low music at the lake or the campground, the speaker will do just fine. At louder volume or deeper bass, you might want a more heavy-duty speaker, but frankly if you’re just trying to get music for your own campsite this speaker is enough. I didn’t have the issues with the app that other reviews have mentioned, so the developers may have worked out the kinks. I was able to connect my phone to the Luci Explore easily, select music, choose colors, and make custom color sequences. The alarm function was a little clunky and trickier to use (it kept saying I had two alarms set and wouldn’t let me save) and you can’t test the alarm sounds. You could use the light as a sunrise alarm clock by setting a light schedule that gradually gets brighter, but it’s a little more work than if you have a dedicated sunrise alarm clock. For these reasons, the alarm is the weakest link on the Explore in my opinion. It’s a neat little all-in one and I like the option to have a warm orange glow later in summer when real fires are no longer permitted. It's nice that it can be charged by solar or a charge cable, as in Portland sometimes the skies just don't offer enough sunlight.
