Mountain Hardwear Chockstone Alpine Pants

I picked up a second pair of these after years in an older pair. The newer style legs are a little less flared at the base which I am good with. The pockets did unfortunately shrink and makes storage and access more difficult. Also the fabric seems a little stiffer and less flexible than prior version. Overall still good pants.

They Don't Make 'Em Like They Used To!

I own a ton of MH stuff. Good outdoor gear usually. The older style chockstone is all i wear at work. I work outside all year as a carpenter. Good: material is stout but flexible. Pocket liners are a nice mesh. Old style clip belt works well usually (more on that) Bad: front pocket zippers (both) zipped themselves right off the track within 2 weeks. Front pockets are anemic. Good for receipts and that's it. Not a big deal though. Side pocket no longer fits a cell phone No rear pocket. Belt loop is one continuous sheath. Belt comes out every time In the wash. It's quite a process to get it back in. I miss the old style chockstone with zipper back pocket and Clip Belt.

Not Very Durable

Zipper and stitching near front pocket started to degrade after 2 days of light snowboarding and climbing. My initial impression is that these are not very durable pants.

Redesigned To Save Money

I used the previous model for a few years and loved them. Bought the latest edition and it leaves much to be desired. The pant material was changed, much thinner than before. The angle of entry for hip pockets is too high so you can't put your hand in with a hip belt on. The size of the pockets are so small now I can barely get a full ungloved hand in. One pocket I couldn't get my palm in. They got rid of the thigh pockets altogether. The cuff extender was shortened so I can get them over my ski boots. The crampon guard was removed so an tap from a point will make a nice big cut.
