I have bought this radio twice now, but the second time was more due to the fact that my vehicle was already set up for it and the price had come down considerably. The first radio had issues with channel drift that could be rectified by changing the channel then returning. It finally was replaced when the transmitter quit working. The radio lasted approx 2.5 years. When/If this newly installed radio has the same problems I will not replace it with the same setup.

Nice radio at a really good price. Good transmit range in the forest. The mic is very light and feels cheap but it works. Will probably replace. Midland should offer a couple of antenna bundles. I bought the magnetic mount and used an existing antenna to save a few bucks. If you want a solid 40 watt GMRS radio at a great price, this is a great choice.

So far my experiences have been great! The radio is installed and easily understood controls. I have programmed using the separately purchased cable and downloaded software, also from Midland. For my tastes the included manuals as small but this was easily overcome by downloading the manuals from the support section of the website. I'm still learning and reading but from a beginner perspective all seems well.

I really like this radio. It is simple to use, not overwhelming for a GMRS beginner. I easily programmed it to communicate with local repeaters. I use it as a base station, and it gets excellent reception. Transmissions are received well on the other end. A good solid unit.

Impressive radio, and seems like it's built like a tank. I am running this off an AC power supply (12v/ 30a/ 360w) and very happy with the overall function. When connected to a 10Ah LiPho battery is couldn't quite get up to high power and glitched a bit (powering from anything but an automotive or truck battery may be challenging for high power- a power supply like the one I mentioned works great.) I still have not figured out how to use CTCSS privacy codes which is what all the X Talkers we use are currently using- not a huge issue but mildly annoying (DCS works fine, but not all my X Talkers have DCS privacy code options.) Also trying to figure out if the radio will do the RB chirp when a transmission is over- so far unsuccessful and that would be a helpful feature. Only other drawback is that the microphone plug (looks similar to RJ45) can pull out slightly and lose contact without any obvious sign of that so you can be talking thinking that you are broadcasting when you're not. Overall happy and this was a great value.

Bought the mxt400 to replace the smaller mxt115 in my Subaru Outback. Like the additional power and range/clarity, but couldn’t find any obvious spots to mount due to size. Decided to customize center console storage to drop the radio vertically into the center armrest storage. Will add an rj45 extension cable and rj45 button type port that will install in the side of the center console near where the mic will mount so I don’t have to run the cord out from under the armrest to avoid pinching it.

I bought this for my polaris general xp, i custom built a waterproof box for it and it worked great! Looks slick with the tiny antenna it came with! Super clear transmission even at long range! Going to buy another for my camper for a base camp radio!

I have programmed many radios for amateur radio use and government radios for my job as well. The MXT400 was simple to understand. The GMRS frequencies are already programmed as channels. I bought the 40-watt MXT400 to use as a base station due to its higher power. I have 15- watt MXT115s in my family vehicles. This combination is working well as the MXT400 is larger and less suited to installing in sedans whereas the MXT115 is compact and light. So far, I get clear to noisy communications up to about a 10-mile range line-of-sight (simplex) from base to mobiles in Las Vegas, NV depending on obstructions. The radio is sturdy and should last many years. Sound quality is good and on par with ham radios. Midland includes user manuals on its website as I prefer to study the manuals on my PC screen. A bigger challenge is navigating the FCC website to apply for and get your GMRS license even for a retired federal employee such as myself. Any tips Midland could include for novice users to apply for their license would be helpful.
