Great Lightweight Framed Pack

I have used this pack for countless miles and having had a few packs over the years, the Focal is my favorite. It gets most things right such as minimal but still existing organization (dual-access side pockets, mesh center pouch, brain with top and bottom pockets) and fabrics are durable but not overkill. It adjusts enough to be fit well, and I prefer the trampoline back over any other design for the greatly increased airflow. This trampoline back does not seem to be widely adopted even within Gregory. It is lightweight without feeling like a grocery bag with handles thanks to a supportive frame and hip belt. Simple suggestions for improvement in my own preferred order of importance: - slightly larger hip belt pockets or a rainbow style zipper for easier access and phone storage (looking at you, Evolved Supply Co hip belt pocket) - thicker harness as used on the Baltoro, at least for the smaller size, as a base weight of 17lbs still gets uncomfortable at times - one side zipper access (although I do love a U-zip when inside the tent) - add some lightweight webbing on the shoulder straps to match common pouch options (would this add too much weight?) While I love the pack (and that it has my name on it), let's get this upgraded model working!!

Solid Pack

I've taken mine out three times now and can confidentley endorse this pack. It's light and packs well. The only gripe I have is I wish it had loops or cord to securley tie something to the bottom. Otherwise no issues. The bottle holders on the side being slanted makes it much easier to grab a water bottle than other designs.

Uncompromising Performance And Comfort In A Lightweight Package

Well-built pack that’s comfortable and carries well. The website lists a max carry weight of 35 lbs and times I’ve loaded up on water before making camp I’ve definitely pushed it to 39-40 and it’s still been remarkably comfortable. Only weighs about 2.6 lbs but is a framed back with partial trampoline mesh ventilation on your back. The hip belt is pliable (contributing to the low carry weight) but substantial enough for moderate weights and is super comfortable. The 58L size makes it a nice all-rounder where I can bring lots of extras and food on a week+ summer trip, or there’s room for layers on a shorter winter trip as well. The compression straps work great, running underneath the water bottle pockets so as not to interfere with them (unlike on the Osprey Exos, where you need to strap down your bottle or not be able to squeeze it in later). And those bottle pockets are extremely accessible without contortionist training - the front angled access kept me easily hydrated all trip with no shoulder discomfort. The shoulder straps are sewn into the frame with no adjustability, so once you buy a size you’re only adjusting tension on the straps and not frame length. It’s amazingly comfortable when you size it right though. Phenomenal pack, couldn’t ask for anything more.

Lightweight Pack For Moving Fast

Bought the pack for 2-4 day backpacking trips in the Rockies. Overall, super happy with the pack — an order of magnitude lighter than my last, which I can definitely feel at the end of a long day. I regularly carry 30+ lbs (backpacking with kids) and it’s still comfortable. Only minor gripe that comes with the lightweight territory is a couple of small scrapes / holes in the bottom, despite always being conscious that it’s not bulletproof. Nonetheless, super happy and would buy again.

Could Be The Best But Waist Belt M Size Is Off :(

This pack feel so comfortable with my typical gear load of 25-30 Lbs! It doesn't have features like zippers and compartments as my other 4 Gregory packs, but over the years, I've been using those extra features less and less. I've used Exos and other cottage ultralight packs too, this pack is of course not ultralight, but to me, this pack is simply the best if one considers not only the weight, but all the factors: weight, features, ventilation, and comfort. Unfortunately, with the M size that fits my torso well, I had to cinch the waist belt all the way to the end for my 30" waist size, although the description states the M belt fits down to 28" waist. Very sad this doesn't work for me as once I lose weight during long distance hikes, the waist belt will not work. I also noticed Youtuber, Justin Outdoors, found exactly the same problem with the waist belt sizing in his Youtube video. Really hope Gregory could solve this size issue in future versions, it seems to me there is space for shifting and shortening the belt for ~2 inches, but I'm of course not a pack designer. With this said, if you have a waist size of 33" or more with M size torso, I highly recommend you give this a try! You will be surprised how comfortable and ventilated you could get from such a lightweight backpack.

Light Pack With Durability Issues

I purchased the Focal 58 to replace my circa 2000 Palisades. While the Palisades still remains in excellent condition, I was looking for a more light weight pack. I thought the Focal would meet my needs for a multi-day hike on the NPT. Unfortunately, I ran into a durability issue almost immediately. While making final adjustments to the pack, one of the upper clasps securing the side compression straps broke. The bigger problem is that this clasp is permanently sewn into the pack so replacing it is not an option. The clasp is so delicate it can not be repaired. While this damage might seem minor the concern is the long term viability of the other clips and clasps are suspect. On a brighter note the pack holds a fair amount of gear and carry’s between 25 to 30 pounds well. In addition all the pockets are really well thought out and useful. I am 5’ 11” and about 185 lbs, my torso length is about 20”. I tried both the medium and large and will both fit, the medium fit better in the shoulders. While this pack carries well and is certainly light weight, concerns for long term durability constrain me from wholeheartedly recommending this pack.

fantastic backpack all the straps you need. side mesh pockets are great size to hold a smart water bottle and still fit trekking poles. the ice axe strap is great for one axe. I am 5'9" and thin with like 30" waist and a small fit very good. As comfortable as my Baltoro 65 but half the weight. Carried 33 pounds very well. One gripe I have is that the chest strap slides up and down very easily, it does not stay in place, this was usually not irritating because it went to a place that did not bother me, however this could be really annoying for some people

Light And Comfy

I'm a really big fan of packs that use a suspended mesh trampoline as back cushioning. The increased airflow really helps me out as a sweaty person. The thing is while I've been trying to lighten my gear I found many of the light/ultralight packs forgo that feature. This pack is very light but still has the mesh suspension so it's like the best of both worlds for me! It also has well thought out pockets and lid.

Great Pack With A Flaw

Overall, I really enjoy this pack. Very lightweight compared to my previous 65L Atmos AG and it seems to hold weight just as well. In my opinion, it has just the right amount of features. I like having waist belt pockets, straps, and a way to attach hiking poles, but don't really care for extra pockets on the back or a separate sleeping bag access at the bottom like many packs have. The pack is very comfortable.... When it's sitting on my hips correctly. I bought the small because I have a smaller torso, and despite this I still fully max out the waist straps with my 31-32" waist. I cannot cinch it up any more. Because of this, I find it slowly slides down my hips and I have to readjust every so often. If you're waste is any smaller than mine, I don't recommend this pack. Other than that, it's a great pack.

My New Favorite Pack!!!

I've been using the Gregory Baltero 65 for the last 10 years and have loved every minute with it!! Over the last 2 years I have started switching out some of my older gear for more ultra-light equipment and my pack was the last thing on the list. I tried The North Face Banchee 50, but the pack didn't fit my gear as well as the Baltero 65 did. Next I tried the Hyperlite, but the absence of a frame made it feel like a overloaded Jansport backpack from highschool, super uncomfortable. I also tried the Big Agnes Prospector 50.. and while that one showed promise, especially in the hipbelt, the upper straps were just too narrow and stiff making it uncomfortable on my shoulders. Enter the Focal 58. This pack fit all my gear in the exact same way I had it in the Baltero 65, even though it's 7 liters less.. it's Amazing!!! It weighs 2.5lbs lighter and has better airflow all around. The shoulder straps are way more comfortable even though they have way less padding than the Baltero 65, like how is that even possible?! But best of all, I like how this pack still has a frame, which distributes the weight flawlessly!! By far the most comfortable pack I've owned. Do yourself a favor and just get it!! You won't regret it!!

Excellent Lightweight Backpack, With Some Caveats

I have used my Gregory Focal 58 (Small) for up to 7 day wilderness backpacking trips and really like the size, weight and features of the pack. My wife also really likes her Facet 55, which is pretty much identical other than different sizing and colour. All the pockets are really well thought out and well sized, even the hip belt pockets are a good size to be useful (and the zippers on them are easy to open and close, unlike my last pack). There have been no durability issues with the pack so far. It took me a while to get used to the different balance of this pack from my previous packs because its weight is further off my back due to its mesh suspension. I can’t say that I really like this, but I think it is a worthwhile compromise given how much more comfortable the pack is on my back, especially in warmer weather. Smaller waisted people should be aware that Gregory’s hip belt specifications for the pack appear to be inaccurate. The pack specifications say it will fit a size 27" waist, I have a 30" waist and the Focal 58 size Small hip belt just barely fits me, I have it cinched in all the way, there is no further adjustment and no practical way that I can see to make it any shorter. My torso length is between the Small and Medium sizes so I also tried on a size Medium pack (specification is 28” waist) but the Medium hip belt didn’t fit me, it was too loose. My other significant issue with the pack is that the shoulder straps seem to be a bit narrow and/or underpadded for me, they become uncomfortable on my collarbones after a short time wearing the loaded pack (up to 32lbs on a longer trip). Luckily the hip belt is extremely comfortable so I can stand to wear the pack on multi-day trips, and I like everything else about it enough that I have decided to put up with the shoulder strap discomfort and hope that eventually I’ll get used to them. Some other wishes for the pack are that it was available in a more visible colour, had a different arrangement for hanging the hydration bag (it’s an open hook so my non-Gregory hydration bag can unhook and slide to the bottom of the hydration pocket sometimes after I lay the pack down), had a clip in the main top pocket (I added one) like the one in the underside pocket, and had a shoulder strap hiking pole holder like my previous pack (I was able to add something similar on my Focal and on my wife's Facet). Overall, I really like this backpack and recommend it, but would like to see Gregory modify the shoulder straps so they are more comfortable and (only significant for smaller waisted people) modify the hip belt so it can be shorter (but don’t make the hip belt pockets smaller!).

Not A Home Run

I bought this pack and returned it. Did not fit as well as new Gregory 69-liter pack I recently bought and kept. Not nearly as comfortable and well-fitting as the new Deuter Air Contact Ultra 50+5 that I recently got for short backpacking trips. I think the new Deuter torso length adjustable system is better and easier to use than the Focal.

Fantastic Pack

Purchased this pack to replace my Gregory Banshee from 1999 that is still functioning perfectly. I wanted something lighter to use for 5-7 day backpacking trips and this pack is perfect. I was able to pack six days of food and gear and push the load to 40 pounds and the pack performed beautifully with a very comfortable fit. I am 5'9" 165lbs and the Medium fits me perfectly. Love the hip belt pockets, the mesh opening on the back of the pack and the compression straps for the side pockets. Really well made pack that functions like a full size pack despite its ultralight nature.

Sits Perfectly On The Fence…

I am extremely pleased with this pack. My purchase was based on finding a lightweight pack, but not frameless like some of the extreme lightweight packs available. This has all the comfort needed without extra weight. It is a simple pack when it comes to access/pockets. This was also a positive factor in my choice of purchase because it’s less that can wear out/break on extended hikes. I love my Baltoro, but I will be using this Focal 58 much more. I am also planning on buying the women’s version for my partner. Thanks for offering a pack that balances comfort/features with weight.
