Worst Fitting Pack I’ve Ever Tried

I have three other Gregory packs that I absolutely love. Not the Focal. This is probably the worst fitting pack I have ever tried. The shoulder straps don’t fit comfortably no matter how I tried to adjust them. The chest strap adjusted to the max was still not enough to allow for how broad my chest is. Where th shoulder straps attach is too narrow and it causes the straps to rub on your neck. And there is a seam on the straps will rub you back raw. I purchased a Large, th same as i always have. And I’m not an inexperienced hiker. I have a Paragon 58 that has close to 2000 miles on it. The Focal didn’t make it a full hour of a test walk. It’s being returned and I’ll try something else.

Great Comfort!

I bought this last year. Light weight and comfortable. Weight with tent, clothes and sleeping system 9 pounds. Food for a week, 11 pounds. 2 L of water 4 pounds. Total 25 pounds. Adjustable rods make the weight close to my back and shoulders making hiking so much more comfortable for this 70 year old

Light Weight And Strong

Used on a 40mile trip held up to rain and rough treatment. The bag is very lightweight and took a lot of the load off my back especially uphill.

Solid Lightweight Pack

I have had this pack for a while now - maybe two years? I have put about 350 miles of AT on it. It has performed and held up well. It is a great sub 3lb pack. The only downside, in my opinion, is the skinny little adjustment straps for load lifters and compression straps. While I don't care for them, I understand weight needs to be cut any way it can be cut. Having said that, I pretty much just set it and forget it so being rather nit-picky.

Solid Lw Option With A Few Improvements Needed

I've been using this pack for a few years, and it's a solid lightweight option under the 3 lb. mark, but could also use some improvements. It carries weight fairly well for when your base weight is low, but you still have to hump 6 days of food and 3 liters of water. However I often do wish the hipbelt had a little thicker padding/structure. Also, sometimes the metal wire frame hits and rubs my back & sides. Speaking of, the wire frame extends to the bottom sides, which is covered by a fabric, which despite being thicker, is showing quite a bit of wear from every time I set the pack down on its bottom. Could use a better design here, perhaps bending the wire frame in to meet behind the lumbar pad. The back panel is nice and breathable, but the bottom of it is slick and tends to slide down my back when sweating. Adding the grippy silicone accents to the bottom lumber area (like on the Baltoros) should be a standard feature on all Gregorys. Shoulder straps are fine. The packbag is simple and straightforward, which I appreciate. Gregory has too many models that all have the same sleeping bag compartment zipper and other access that just add weight and never get used (by me anyway). The fabric is lightweight and has held up well, though doesn't inspire as much confidence as some of their other packs. I really do wish they'd use a better stretch mesh with a tighter weave as the current stuff scuffs through and can snag easily. I've never used the straps across the bottom of the pack, and think those could be cut. The Polygiene odor control really works and is so nice to not have a pack smell like trail B.O. when you bring it home. I'm glad the top pocket is removable, but do wish the zipper had a wider (L-shaped) opening. Due to the lighter fabrics and lack of structure opening it is a two-handed affair. Lastly, I don't care for the neon blue color accents that make it feel like a little kids school pack. Stick to the classy more monotone or colorblocking, especially that Alaska Blue of the Baltoro. But overall it's been a solid lightweight pack option. Just look forward to a few improvements on the next gen.

Great Ultralight Option

This bag was the first Gregory Pack I have tried after using Osprey for years. While this will not replace my bigger Osprey packs, I will be using this pack frequently for one or 2 night trips. The fabric is tough but light, the exterior pouch on the back is very large and stretchy and the hip pockets are awesome! The only complaint I would have is that the system they used to attach a pad or chair to the bottom of your pack is not as secure as a buckle/synch system. It is not the end of the world, especially since the side water bottle holders are capable of holding loads of things...you might just have to pack things a bit differently than some other packs you frequently use. Overall, if you are looking for an budget friendly option to get yourself into more of the ultralight backpacking space, this is a great option and a great pack!

Great Pack If You’re Focused On Reducing Weight

Love my Gregory Focal 48. Been using it all summer and it helped me get my base weight way down. Great synch and release system for the main compartment (other manufacturers take note, that’s how it should be done). Thought I would miss having multiple compartments but there’s a simplicity to having just one. Nylofume bag at the bottom wrapped up for bedding and clothes, everything else on top. Just have to be mindful when loading each day. Leave rain gear and shorts up top if needed. Thought the Free Float system was just marketing hype, but I can feel a difference, no more hip soreness (although I’m also carrying less weight) and had good mobility when doing some lite scrambling. Back ventilation and side pockets for Smart water bottles are excellent. I ditched the brain on the last few trips and again there’s a simplicity to keeping that stuff in a diddy bag instead. The Focal is so easy to open and close it’s no big deal to keep it near the top if you need to get into it. Hip Belt pockets are pretty small, and the pocket under the hip belt pockets for tucking belt straps is fairly useless (I ended up just trimming the belt straps) Overall highly recommended.

It’s Ultralight To Me

At 2.5lbs this light pack is a perfect balance of support and durability. I’ve tried other ultralight packs and I don’t see why people would pick a frameless just to save a few ounces. Gregory has nailed it again

Perfectly Balanced

I previously experimented with a true UL pack, the HMG SW. I enjoyed the simplistic streamlined design, but I was missing the comfort and features of a more traditional pack. I wanted something that would strike a balance between the two, and the Focal 48 delivered. It’s only a little over half a pound heavier than the HMG, but significantly more comfortable and supportive. I got the basic features back, like mesh back panel, accessible water bottle holders, and a brain, but nothing too excessive like many other traditional packs. I took the Focal out on a challenging multi-day trip in southern Utah, and it performed great. Carried like a champ, held everything I needed, and felt very intuitive to use. Not to mention, the pack looks awesome. For those choosing between the 48l and 58l, I have a base weight around 16 lbs. My gear is mostly lightweight and packable, and with a good amount of food, I had plenty of room leftover in the 48L. For sizing reference, I’m 6 feet, 32 inch waist, 21 inch torso and the medium size fits great. This pack is a home run from Gregory!

Good But Can Use Some Improvements

The good: Lightweight, fits me well, side pocket that points forward to allow placing water bottle without taking backpack off. Improvement: Could use front zip opening like the Zulu, Side pocket not so easy to access when pack is on, Belt pockets seem set back more compared to Zulu (for accessibility), no rain cover.

A Great Combination Of Features

Not ULTRA-light, but still pretty lightweight, AND includes all the features you need for a great backpacking pack. Comfortable suspension with a ton of breathability. Well-thought out external side pockets. Carries a stable load that is neither too high, nor wide. I’m not a huge fan of the Gregory-only water bladder system, but I use water bottles 99% of the time, so not a big deal for me. I like this pack so much, we bought the women’s version (Facet 45) for my wife.

Man I Wanted To Love This Bag.

My Paragon 48 is my favorite bag for overnight hikes and up to two nights. It carries weight like a dream, my typical base weight being 17.6 pounds and my trail weight being about 22. I really wanted to love this bag, seeing at it is more like an ultralight version of the Paragon. Unfortunately, they've done the frame system in a way where the top corners round off lower than in the Paragon and there is no padding there, meaning they rub directly into my shoulders in an aluminum-to-bone way. It's very uncomfortable. Also, I know that this is in the spirit of ultralight everything, but the torso height is not adjustable like it is in the Paragon or Baltoro, both of which I own and love. My torso height is 20.25" which is within this range but comparing it directly to my Paragon 48 which is almost the exact same size and dimensions, the hip belt on this one is permanently fixed about 1.5" too low for me and nothing can be done to fix it. And my final point: this bag was supposed to be almost a full pound lighter than my Paragon 48. In practice, it is only 4.6 oz lighter. It's not light enough, its not adjustable, and its not comfortable. It looks stellar and I wanted to love it, but this ain't it. I hope that Gregory will immediately learn from this bag and make an improved version that solves these issues. Buy the Paragon 48 and carry the extra 4.6oz. You'll thank me later.
