Run (Or Cycle) Away From This Device & Company!
I bought my Garmin Edge 830 in July 2024, so this is two years of daily use talking, not a first impression.
Pairing it to my phone was a nightmare from day one, and it happened again yesterday when I plugged it into Garmin Express to fix an unrelated bug. The "sync" wiped my device settings entirely, sent me back through full first-time setup, and left me stuck in a pairing loop between the phone and the unit. A quick search showed I'm far from the only one. This is a known, unresolved failure mode, not a fluke. It feels like Garmin is the biggest in the biz and just could not be bothered to look into these frustrating bugs that have been around for a long time.
The Garmin Connect app is its own special frustration. It pushes you into its training plans, hands you workouts from its "coach" algorithm, then tells you the workout you just did barely had any recovery benefit. So it's simultaneously ordering you around and undermining you. Meanwhile the actual feature I rely on, Training Status, has refused to populate for over a month straight despite complete power and heart rate data on every single ride. The forums are full of other people with the exact same dead end.
I'm not a novice with electronics… not a genius coder but like, I'm the person coworkers ask to fix the wifi. This isn't a learning curve problem. Maps recalculate sluggishly. Confirmation prompts are worded so confusingly that you accidentally delete your ride because the 'are you sure you want to not delete forever' button or something similar is hard to read when you're biking.
Two years in, this device has actively taken away from my quality of life many times over. I love biking so I'm very familiar with it and if I prevent anyone from suffering I will feel good about myself.

Problems Syncing
The computer systems are very glitchy on the Garmin‘s, often have syncing problems and aren’t easy to fix. The instruction manuals and online helpterrible.

Small But Mighty
Nice, compact screen but still able to show all the data I want on a ride. Screen pages are highly customizable to show only what you want. Battery life lasts multiple rides (2-5 hours each) before needing a charge. Easy to freeride and save a route after if you like it, or you customize a route in advance from the Garmin connect website and shoot it straight to your Edge. Syncs great with other Garmin devices (HRM duo and Garmin Rally pedals)

Excellent Addition
Works great for MTB & road cycling. I really enjoy being able to see all the metrics at a glance while on the bike. Previously I just had my Garmin Instinct, which worked, but had to turn my wrist any time I wanted to see something. Pairing the HR to the head unit from the Instinct 2X has been flawless also.

It Fell Apart
I bought a Garmin 830 a year and half ago. Recently when I tried to charge it, it fell apart. The front separated from the back so it is not functional.

Love Touch Screen Vs Botns
My 530 died. Replaced it with 830. A little larger screen. So far, a winner.

Master Of All Bikes
I use my 830 for my gravel, road and mountain bikes. All bikes are equipped with SRAM AXS which connect seamlessly. The battery charge last forever and the post ride summaries on connect.garmin give it that edge.
