We Are Back. . . With Caveats
First the pros: P35 foam is infinitely superior to Ego and happy they are finally ditching it. I'd been running in the Experience Flow 2 for a year now and knew how much better P35 is as a foam. Vibram outsole - having it on a road shoe is a fantastic addition because you can breathe on Altra's current outsoles and they will wear down. Stripped down the over engineering of the 8. That thing was a heavy mess. Very light and speedy feeling shoe. Cons: I don't even have a wide foot and these "standard" fit feel as tight as Nike's. My foot can't splay. The tongue material is a bit annoying and can bunch. SIZING. Altra, what last are you using? I never believe people when they say size up so I ordered my usual 10. 5. Way too small. Sized up to an 11 and it's good, but I've run the gamut between 10 to 11 from them over the years. Overall: Amazingly close to the GOAT (4. 5) so stock up everyone because they only get this model right every 4 to 5 years

Almost There, But Still Falling Short
I've been with Altra probably since the Lone Peak 2's and have tried a variety of shoes from them spanning from trail to road. The one continuous theme with Altra is that they just always seem to fall short whether (and usually) quality issues, fit issues, or underwhelming foams--and that's how I feel about the Torin 9's. I'll start by saying that for the most part this shoe is awesome--great fit, great step in feel, vibram rubber, and the foam is miles ahead from the Torin 7's foam. However, I feel the same way as when I tried the Escalante 3's. The foam has a very little give to it, and then it just feels like a dead, firm brick of foam underneath that give causing a firm/harsh ride. I would like to see how this foam breaks in, but I don't have the financial luxury to *hope* that the foam gets better. I think if there was 1-2mm more of stack and the foam just a having a little more of that springy energy return, then this shoe would be a 5/5 (for me). I don't normally write reviews but I'm writing this because Altra has a special place in my heart. With almost every shoe that I've bought over the years, I feel like they're always just missing that one thing. I keep thinking they'll dial it in sooner or later, but I always feel let down. Will continue to stick around and overall Altra has been heading in a better direction over the years.

Wide Is Not Wide
I've been wearing Torin since Torin 3 with no issues. When they moved to Standard and Wide (Original) I need Original. Wide is all I can wear in any shoe. Unfortunately this Torin is not wide. It is so snug I had to check the box and the shoes, then checked my order and checked the box and shoes again. They say Wide but they are not for people with truly wide feet. Couple this with another ridiculous tongue that bunches and they are headed back to Altra. You would think after the Torin 5 tongue debacle they would have noticed how hard it is to get this shoe on with the tongue in proper position. On the bright side the Vibram addition is super sweet! All in all I'm disappointed that I have to find a new shoe after years of being pretty happy.

Noice!
One of the best updates Altra has done. Vibram sole is a noticeable upgrade with nice tread pattern - Vibram soles should be added to every model moving forward. Zero drop with medium stack - very comfortable and not sloppy. Big improvement on the tongue and heel collar. Shoe opening rounds under the ankle, where as some of the newer Altras shoes are too angled which digs into my ankle bone. Additionally, the arch seems mellow and spacious, where as some of the new Altras midsole digs into my arch, not this one. Really comfortable, and will be buying more. Of course looking forward to more colors. Only knock is the giant “Altra” letters on the side of the shoe…on the black shoes the lettering is grey and is hideous, so I colored in the letters with permanent black marker and looks really sleek now. A few other people on other websites have mentioned the same about the lettering. All in all, I give it a 5 star with a slight eye twitch on the branding. I think this is my new all around travel shoe. Id love to see the Torin 9 made into a waterproof version, jet black, carbon gray and dark leather brown would be cool. Noooice job Altra!

I’m Preemptively Putting 5 Stars
This will be a wonderful shoe, and I want Altra to notice that we notice the improvements that are being made to this line of shoes in the way of durability (improved foam material, new outsole with a reputable brand) and fit (maintaining the foundational zero drop, wide toe box, and wide midfoot selections). Thank you, Altra team, for aiming to constantly improve and innovate with the wearer in mind. You rock!

Best Daily Trainer
Been eyeing this shoe for a while now and got it last week! It’s amazing. First couple of runs in it felt great. It’s very roomy, comfortable and feels good underfoot! Paired with the injini running socks, I’m excited to introduce this as my new daily trainer.
